Songs by Alfonso X, Dowland, Gesualdo, Monteverdi, and Des Prez were reworked by Michaël Brijs for voice, violin, flute, clarinet/saxophone, double bass, percussion, and harp and performed by an ensemble of top classical and jazz musicians. While the vocal lines remain generally unchanged, the musical context makes them sound brand new and familiar at the same time.

 

The music recording process was initially designed to capture the performance of a piece of music: musicians responded emotionally to each other, affecting the feel of each piece of music they were performing. On modern day recordings this process has generally been reversed: the goal is technical perfection, often at the expense of emotion, of live interaction. The recording of KAOS Renaissance “Unplugged” falls under the former category – a warm, fragile, live sound.

 

The term “unplugged”, most likely never used in conjunction with Renaissance, was inspired by Miles Davis’ records from the fifties and sixties and the MTV Unplugged Sessions from the nineties. They were about the energy, the imperfection, the hesitant search for sound and form, and not about stylistic expectations. In the same way, Renaissance can be categorised neither as a jazz nor as a classical album. There is a unique genre-defying combination of voice, unique instrumentation, and improvisation – a fresh sound.

Renaissance

Liederen van Alfonso X, Dowland, Gesualdo, Monteverdi en Des Prez werden door Michaël Brijs recomposed voor zang, viool, fluit, klarinet/saxofoon, contrabas, percussie en harp en uitgevoerd door een ensemble van topmusici uit de klassieke en jazzwereld. Terwijl de zanglijnen over het algemeen onveranderd blijven, zorgt de muzikale context ervoor dat ze tegelijkertijd gloednieuw en vertrouwd klinken.

Het muziekopnameproces was oorspronkelijk bedoeld om de uitvoering van een muziekstuk vast te leggen: muzikanten reageerden emotioneel op elkaar en beïnvloedden zo het gevoel van elk muziekstuk dat ze uitvoerden.
